Seed growing guide
A good garden starts with the right seed, soil and season. These first steps are general guidance; always follow the instructions for the actual seed variety you buy.
1. Plan for your local season
Choose crops suited to your climate, available sunlight and growing space. Sowing windows vary across India and by variety.
2. Prepare a healthy start
Use clean containers with drainage and a free-draining seed-starting medium. Label each sowing with its variety and date.
3. Sow with care
Follow the seed packet for sowing depth and spacing. Keep the medium gently moist without leaving roots standing in water. Some species need soaking, stratification or other specific preparation.
4. Give seedlings light and room
Provide suitable light after germination. Thin seedlings as needed. For crops raised in a nursery, gradually acclimatise seedlings before transplanting.
5. Grow steadily
Water consistently, keep good airflow and check plants regularly. Use support for climbing or heavy-fruiting plants where appropriate.
